When we are young
playing at the shore
we are often told
"beware the undertow"
That's what drowns little kids
as their mothers look on
from the beach, squinting,
saluting the sun.
But as adults,
no guardian yells from the beach
"beware the undercurrent"
The undercurrent
is what drowns adults,
as no one watches from afar.
